Trading card prices are always changing. A card can move up or down in value based on demand, tournament play, new deck strategies, reprints, new set releases, and changes in the overall market.
That’s why The Surprise Shop regularly updates the prices of our trading card singles.
Every Sunday and Wednesday, our system checks current TCGplayer Market Prices and updates our singles accordingly. TCGplayer Market Price gives us a real-world reference for what cards are currently selling for—not simply what someone has them listed for.
Every Card Is Inspected
Price is only part of the equation. Every single that enters our inventory is physically inspected and conditioned using TCGplayer’s Card Conditioning Standards.
Each card is evaluated for imperfections such as edgewear, scratches, scuffing, surface wear, indentations, bends, grime, defects, and other signs of wear before we assign its condition. TCGplayer’s standards provide consistent criteria for evaluating both the type and severity of these imperfections.
Cards are then categorized using TCGplayer’s established condition levels:
Near Mint (NM) • Lightly Played (LP) • Moderately Played (MP) • Heavily Played (HP) • Damaged (DMG)
Condition Matters
Not every copy of a card has the same value. A Near Mint copy and a Moderately Played copy of the same card can have very different market values.
Whenever condition-specific market data is available, we use the TCGplayer Market Price that corresponds with the condition of the card in our inventory.
This means the condition we assign isn't just a description—it directly helps determine the appropriate market price for that specific card.
Why Did a Price Change?
If you notice that a card costs more—or less—than it did the last time you visited, the market may have moved since our previous update.
By refreshing our pricing **twice every week—Sunday and Wednesday—**we can respond to those changes while keeping prices stable enough that they aren't constantly changing every time you refresh a page.
Our goal is simple: inspect every card, condition it consistently, and keep our prices aligned with the current trading card market.
With thousands of individual cards in our inventory, this is a tremendous undertaking, and we work hard to be as accurate and consistent as possible. That said, we're human, and occasionally mistakes can happen.
